Engine

The car engine is the heart beat behind everything. Found within your engine bay, the car engine works by allowing fuel and air to filter into the engines cylinders. When the fuel and air feeds into the cylinders a small combustion takes place. The combustion causes a rapid expansion of gases in the form of heat which in turn creates the motion.

Ignition

When you turn the ignition switch on, you are allowing a current to flow to the battery. The ignition system generates a high voltage and sends it directly to each sparkplug. This ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engines combustion chambers, causing the combustion with the engine.

Muffler

Under your car you can find a metal container, which contains a series of sub-chambers inside. The muffler helps to reduce the overall engine noise.

Alternator

The alternator is responsible for all the electrics within your car. The alternator turns a magnet which sits within a wired coil. This rotating movement of the drive belt get turned into electricity, which produces a voltage to charge the cars battery. The car battery is then able to power all the cars electrical components, such as headlights, brake lights and internal electrics.

Radiator

The engine produces a lot of heat when it’s running, meaning that it needs a radiator to keep it at an optimum temperature. The radiator is located at the front of the car. It allows fresh air to run over and through all the radiator fins. The fins on the radiator are used to help absorb excess heat to ensure that car doesn’t overheat. Coolant is pumped through the engine block and into the radiator and picks up heat from the engine.

Transmission

The cars transmission ensures that the correct amount of power and torque goes from the engine to the wheels. This allows you to drive within different gear ratios according to the speed of the road. To shift between gears your engine and transmission must disconnect temporarily. When you push the clutch in your engine is disconnecting from the transmission.

A Guide To Buying Used Cars

When looking at used cars, the list of things to watch out for could be endless. Because of this, it can be difficult to see if there’s anything wrong with the car. It could seem perfect but then a year down the line you could start seeing problems. As a general rule, if a deal seems like it could be too good to be true then it probably is. Hopefully though, you can avoid many of these by looking at this handy guide to buying used cars.

Good things to look for

Here are a few qualities that you want to see in a used car. If a car has been garaged for its entire life then you can bet that the bodywork is in good condition, no matter if the car is a few years old. Another good sign is if the car has had a minimal number of owners. One owner means that you have an idea of how the car has been driven, and can speak with the owner about the car. 

They will also likely have the full history of the car, which is a big advantage. If the mileage is reasonable, for example less than 10,000 per year, then this is also a good sign. However, if the mileage too good to be true then stay clear of the car.

Things to watch out for

Do some research on the internet about your car, and have a look at some guide prices. Make sure that the price meets your expectations and don’t get overcharged, even if it looks like a good deal. Similarly, check to see if there are any common faults with that particular model of car and if they appear on the one you are viewing.

Also have a look at the car. If there are any misaligned panels or unexplained discolouration in the bodywork this could indicate an accident which has not been documented properly. It could also indicate a possible ‘cut and shut’ job where two or more written off cars are fused together to create one vehicle. This can be extremely dangerous so make sure you view the car in a good light.

Vauxhall Celebrates 110th Anniversary

At a time when Vauxhall is looking towards the future, and announcing a set of more powerful and economical engines for its new range, they're also finding time to celebrate the past.

On August 18, the Vauxhall Heritage Centre will be opening to showcase the history and heritage to celebrate their 110th birthday. Visitors will be able to view all the cars that made Vauxhall the company it is today, absolutely free. In addition, there will also be other activities and entertainment, and refreshments throughout the day.

There are over 60 cars in Vauxhall's heritage centre, including many classics, but also a number of concept cars from over the years.

There are several notable cars, such as the first production road car to reach 100mph, the 30-98.

There's an original Mk1 Astra GTE, too, and a Firenza Droop Snoot that was restored recently.

There's also some more modern examples too, such as the VXR220, the sports car based on a Lotus Elise. There will also be a Lotus Carlton on show, the first ever super-saloon, capable of 180mph.

The Future Of Vauxhall- Introducing The Vauxhall Monza

This week the Vauxhall Monza was revealed ahead of its official debut screening. The new concept car is due to influence the styling of future models for Vauxhall, bringing Vauxhall into a new era for performance and design.

One singular image was released earlier this week of the Monza concept to tease Vauxhall fans. The image shows Opel/Vauxhall CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumnn kneeling down next to the vehicle, proudly grinning at his design.

Car critics and enthusiasts have all noted that the Monza concept shares very little similarities with current Vauxhall car models on the market with comparisons being made to Audi R8. However, you can still see Vauxhall traits within the grille so not everything has changed!

Reports are circling that the Monza concept will be a sporty coupe, however Vauxhall has neither accepted nor denied this fact so we’ll wait and see.

Soon to be released car models such as the Audi A5 Coupe and the BMW 4-series coupe are likely to be rivals for the latest Vauxhall car.

So what does the name Monza mean we hear you ask? The name refers to the Opel Monza coupe, which was built between 1978 and 1982 and which was badged as the Vauxhall Royale in the UK.

Good News: Car Sales Are On The Rise For 2013

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) car sales increased AGAIN last month, providing a light at the end of the tunnel for the after math of the following recession.

It was reported that new vehicle sales increased by almost 15% last month in comparison to sales figures in 2012, which signals the strongest sales growth in a staggering 14 month period.

Figures show that new car sales have increased by 8.9% when compared to last year, and with the SMMT predicting a 2.1m car sales this year we can expect a further increase in sales when we compare sales figures to 2012.

There were 163.357 vehicles resisted last month, 81,753 were private sales and 75,067 were fleet sales. A breakdown of the statistics indicate the small economical cars are taking the market by storm, with the Ford Fiesta selling 8,083 units, Vauxhall Corsa (6,084), Ford Focus (5,944) and the Volkswagen Golf (5,283).

The price of replacing car parts...

Aston Martin admirers should take note of this story and possibly feel glad this didn’t happen to them.

A £175,000 Aston Martin DBS lay broken in one of the most exclusive areas in London after thieves targeted the luxury car’s wheels. The car was left stacked up on bricks in Eaton Square, Mayfair earlier on this week.

However, it seems as though the thieves’ scheme to take all four wheels from the car was foiled as pictures show the driver’s rear wheel was left on the car with a rather contorted jack poking out from underneath the car. The metalwork around this wheel was also left damaged.

An Aston Martin expert estimated that the damage could cost up to £30,000 to fix, with the wheels are tyres alone easily costing £4,500 to replace. The body repair work could cost up to £3,500 and as the car was not properly suspended when the wheels were unceremoniously removed, there could be damage to the brake discs which could cost the owner several thousand pounds to repair with one newspaper suggesting a figure of up to £20,000.

Why I love my Vauxhall Corsa

This is my Vauxhall Corsa. Her name is Vivienne and she is 14 years old. Funnily enough, I’m not much older than the car!

Vivienne has a 1.2 litre engine and probably missing most of the horsepower she was born with. Sometimes I wish she was a little more ‘gutsy’, but when you buy a small car because you a.) can’t afford the insurance on a bigger car and b.) don’t have 2.4 children and don’t need a big estate car, there has to be some give and take!

I’ve had my Vauxhall Corsa for almost 3 years now and she is just as lovely today as the day I first decorated her with flowers. My Corsa might be old, but unlike my first car, a dilapidated Peugeot 106 with four gears and a manual choke, Vivienne has been reliable. She has refused to start on only two occasions – both because her engine wasn’t turned over for two weeks. She’s never failed an MOT, although the garage has provided me with short lists of advisory things to do. This is fair enough as all vehicles require maintenance. Whether your car is old or new, you can’t be complacent about keeping it running properly as demonstrated in this article about the need for car maintenance.

My Vauxhall Corsa is reliable because I look after her. I love the freedom my car gives me as it means I can go where I want, when I want. As I live somewhere relatively awkward, I can’t rely on public transport to get me to work or to the supermarket for a week’s shopping. Because of this, I need my car to be reliable and my Corsa is exactly that.

Maintenance really is the key to keeping your car running smoothly, how else could my 14 year old Corsa be in better shape than my boyfriend’s 6 year old Seat?

Here are my key tips for keeping your car working well for you well into its dotage:

• Check oil and water regularly. The moving parts in the engine need to be lubricated so low oil levels can cause damage to your engine.
• Check your tyres. Low pressure increases fuel consumption as well as making your vehicle less responsive when you need it most.
• Get strange noises looked at as soon as you notice them. I ignored noise at the back of my Peugeot for weeks and one day, the exhaust pipe just fell off!
• Clutch control is very important. You could drive without a clutch but you would ruin your gear box and that is a big job for your mechanic. On my Vauxhall Corsa, there is a little clip on the cable that stops it from ‘slipping’ and snatching from you. However, if you’re heavy-footed on the clutch, you could wear the cable – again, on my Peugeot the cable just snapped because I was using it far more than I should. I have learned my lesson now.
• Go down to your local breaker’s yard. I always go to Megavaux for spare parts for my car because they know their Vauxhall car parts, they’re really good guys there and its much cheaper going to Megavaux than going to a cowboy mechanic who charges you for work and parts that they haven’t done or used!
